Flinders Escape
Ikara Flinders Ranges Cycling TouR
Organised by Bike SA the Flinders Escape was a cycling tour around Ikara Flinders Ranges in South Australia in May 2024.
Many many years ago when travelling between Victoria and Western Australia at around Port Augusta I could see the southern tip of the ranges. They’d always held been this place of wonder so I was going to be keen to get photos. I upgraded my old iPhone to a newer version with a decent camera and this is some of what I captured.
Three black and white images received a commendation in this year’s Mono Awards and many others have been submitted to stock photography sites.
The Flinders Escape has around 150 riders and is fully supported with all meals and back up, although you sleep in tents in camp grounds and football fields.
The ride starts at Port Augusta and stops overnight in Quorn, Hawker, Parachilna, Blinman, Wilpena Pound, Hawker and Korn before finishing at the start in Port Augusta.
Riders and choose to cycle on bitumen or a mixture of bitumen, gravel and trails. I chose to ride the whole time on bitumen. Distances each day range from 44km to 90km a day.
